Rural Housing Association Tenant Valerie Walker Wins Housing for All Award 2026

Rural Housing Association is proud to celebrate tenant Valerie Walker, who has received the ‘Housing for All’ Award at this year’s Community Relations Council’s Good Relations Awards 2026.

Valerie Walker, a resident of Rural Housing’s Housing for All scheme at Old Mill Court, Sion Mills, has been recognised for her exceptional dedication to fostering positive relationships and building an inclusive, shared community.

Through her leadership and passion for local heritage, Valerie has played a key role in bringing people together across community divides. Her involvement in projects such as Tramway Tales and the historic cricket club initiative has highlighted shared local history and created opportunities for residents to connect, learn, and celebrate their community together. These initiatives have helped promote mutual understanding and respect, strengthening relationships among residents from different backgrounds.

Valerie’s commitment extends beyond heritage work. She runs a weekly social club for older residents, providing a welcoming space that reduces isolation and encourages meaningful connections. In addition, she leads annual tenant events including Christmas, Summer, and Halloween celebrations, creating opportunities for residents to come together in a relaxed and inclusive environment.

Her dedication to community wellbeing is also reflected in her charitable and innovative initiatives. Valerie has organised daffodil planting in support of Foyle Hospice and developed the Voices Without Borders project, which brings refugees and asylum seekers together with local residents. These gatherings encourage open dialogue, challenge stereotypes, and promote empathy and understanding.

Through her hands-on approach, Valerie has helped create a thriving, resilient, and respectful shared community at Old Mill Court. Her work demonstrates how small, meaningful actions can make a lasting difference, ensuring diversity is celebrated and barriers are broken down.

Rural Housing Association congratulates Valerie on this well-deserved recognition. Her commitment, enthusiasm, and leadership continue to inspire residents and staff alike, and her efforts embody the spirit of the Housing for All programme.

Congratulations, Valerie, on this outstanding achievement.
