This summer, Rural Housing proudly launched the first in a new series of Heritage Walks, organised as part of our Housing for All programme in Cushendall and funded by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. The initiative aims to bring the community together through shared experiences that celebrate local history, culture, and place.
The Religious Sites of Cushendall
The first walk, held in July, was titled “The Religious Sites of Cushendall” and was led by local historian Andrew McAlister. Starting at the ruins of Layde Church, participants explored the village’s various churches and other sites of religious importance. Andrew’s deep local knowledge and engaging storytelling made the walk both informative and entertaining, offering participants a new appreciation of Cushendall’s spiritual and historical heritage.

A Journey to Orra Mountain
In September, the second Heritage Walk took the group further afield as Brian McAuley led participants up to the masts on Orra Mountain. Along the way, Brian shared stories about the WW2 plane crash that occurred in the area, the historic Battle of Orra, and the unique geology of the Antrim hills. Walkers were rewarded with magnificent panoramic views stretching across the Scottish Isles, Donegal, Rathlin Island, and the Sperrin Mountains.

Community Connections
After each walk, participants gathered at the Old Schoolhouse for light refreshments and conversation. These post-walk gatherings provided a wonderful opportunity to continue discussions, share stories, and strengthen community bonds.
Looking Ahead
The Heritage Walks have proven to be a great success, combining education, wellbeing, and community spirit.
Plans are already underway for future walks so keep an eye on our website and social media channels for updates. We look forward to welcoming even more members of the Cushendall community to join us as we continue to explore Cushendall’s rich heritage together.
